Conference season is right around the corner for most direct sales companies. Attending your company conference can be beneficial for business and personal development, but it also requires a lot from you. It’s a big financial commitment and it takes up a lot of your time, especially if you have to travel to get there. These tips will help you make sure you’ve thought of everything before you go, so you can get as much out of your conference as possible.

Before You Go

There’s a lot more to attending a conference than simply going to the conference. There’s travel, accommodation, getting time off, babysitters, packing, the list goes on and on. Be sure to think about these things before your conference starts.
  1. Conference Ticket – Lots of companies offer an early bird special for conference tickets. Sometimes they include a discounted rate or extra perks if you purchase by a specific deadline. Purchasing your ticket before that deadline will ensure you get the most bang for your buck. If the deadline has passed see if you can find another consultant who might be looking to sell their ticket at the early bird rate.
  2. Accommodation – Typically your company will have a designated hotel that is offering a group rate. Before you book your room, take a minute to think about your personality and how that will impact your time at the conference. Are you an introvert or an extrovert, or maybe you’re an introverted-extrovert (yes, it’s a real thing)? Will you enjoy spending the weekend with the same people or will you do better if you can step away at the end of the day? Are you up for sharing a room with someone you don’t know? Will you have transportation to and from the hotel if you stay off-site? There are several alternatives to staying at the main hotel including another nearby hotel, as well as rental accommodations from places like AirBnB or VRBO.
  3. Transportation – If you are flying to your conference you will need to figure out how you’re going to get around once you arrive. In addition to renting a vehicle or taking a taxi there are other options to consider. Depending on where the conference is being held, there may be a shuttle that you can catch, or maybe you can take an Uber. Consider starting a ride-share thread in your consultant group. If other people are arriving at the airport at the same time as you, you can share a ride and split the cost. It’s also a great way to meet new people before the conference starts!
 

What To Bring

Packing for a weekend away can be enough of a task on it’s own. Throw in all the things you need besides your clothes, shoes and makeup and it’s pretty easy to leave something behind. We want to help you remember the things you may not have thought of.
  1. A notebook with extra pens – Technology is great, and if you’re a laptop or tablet kind of person, you’ll want that too. But sometimes what you need is a good ol’ fashioned pen and piece of paper! Even if you don’t think you’ll use it, toss it in your bag to take a long. Trust us, it will come in handy.
  2. Business cards and samples – I know, I know, you’re at a conference with people who sell the same thing as you. What could you possibly need business cards and samples for, right? You never know who you’re going to run into while you’re there. Maybe the flight attendants love the clothing you’re wearing or the hotel clerk loves the way you have your nails done. Did you take a taxi or an uber, because the driver might be wondering where they can get that gorgeous jewelry you’re wearing. You see what we’re saying. Don’t forget your cards and samples! Don’t have anything to put on a card? Why not create your own Logo for $5.
  3. Klee-nex – Pack all the little packages of tissues you can find! Conferences are inspiring. You meet new people, you hear amazing stories, the speakers will blow your mind. You never know when someone is going to make you tear up and you’ll be wishing you had a tissue. The person beside you is probably going to need one at some point too, and it’s a great way to make new friends.
 

While You’re There

You’ve worked hard to get to this conference and you owe it to yourself to get everything you possibly can out of the experience.
  1. Pre-conference assessment – before the conference starts, take some time to do an assessment. Ask yourself what you want to get out of the conference. Are you looking for tips for particular areas of your business (organization, social media, follow-up, etc)? Is networking your main focus? Is your focus area personal or professional? Are you unsure of what you’re even looking for? Being aware of what you want out of your conference is the best way to make sure you get it!
  2. Take time to reflect – the days at a conference are long, but they also seem to fly by! Take some time at the end of each day to reflect on what you learned and jot down a few notes. If you wait until the conference is over, you will probably have forgotten many of the things that you thought were important. As long as your notes are enough to jog your memory when you go back to them, that’s good enough.
  3. Be Brave – Going to your conference can be really scary, especially if you don’t know anyone! The thing about your conference is that you will get out of it what you put into it. Read that sentence again – YOU WILL GET OUT OF IT WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT. It’s okay to be scared, but do the scary things anyway. Introduce yourself to people you don’t know. Take pictures and selfies even if you look goofy doing it. Put your hand up and ask your questions. The more you put into your conference the more you will get out of it, and getting every last drop out of it is exactly the point of going!
Going to your direct sales conference is a huge opportunity and learning experience. It’s a great way to meet new friends and spend time with people just like you.
